David Pinkowitz commented on the blog post VOTER GUIDE: Woodbridge school election is Wednesday 2 to 9 p.m. 9 months, 2 weeks ago · View
If you want to make a real difference, you can’t stop at voting on the budget. You must vote for candidates to the Board of Education you support. I believe I am the best candidate with regards to both demanding fiscal responsibility and prioritizing the education of our children. But you can make your own [...]

Your vote counts tomorrow.
Whether you are concerned about the education in Woodbridge or about your taxes, you must take the time to vote on Wednesday. All too often, across the State, people do not vote in school elections or if they do, they focus too much on the budget question and not enough to the Board candidates themselves.
Remember, that if you are against the budget, why would you put back incumbents who pass the budgets you disgree with and decide which programs are in and out? If you are for the budget simply because you are afraid that academic programs might be removed, why would you then put back the incumbents who would cut those academic programs and then blame the voters? Look at the alternatives. Look at candidates like myself who want to make positive change.
Take a stand and vote on Wednesday. Polls are open between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Here is a video of my public comments before the Board during its April 14 meeting regarding the Board’s nepotism policy, which does not appear to be in compliance with State regulations. It ended up turning into a dialogue when the Board Attorney kept interrupting.

Mr. Nelsen, I am aware that New Jersey’s public schools and charter schools take the state assessments. I did further research since your post and to the best of my knowledge, homeschooled students have no assessment requirements http://bit.ly/hwTxjP and private/parochial school students, while typically taking some standardized assessment, do not take the same assessments as [...]

Perhaps you all don’t remember last year’s election, but Mr. Pickens appears to be quoting Governor Christie himself. Last April, in response to to a student assignment in Monroe, Christie accused union members of “using the students like drug mules.” http://bit.ly/g8qA0S Although the purpose of the assignment was disputed, Governor Christie’s accusations were quite clear. Woodbridge has more than twice as many students as Marlboro and almost twice as many even if you add in Marlboro High School, which is in a different school district; therefore, I’m not sure where the similar enrollment argument comes into play. Piscataway and North Brunswick are both comparable in size to Marlboro and I [...]

The fact that some school bus drivers being added back to the budget changed the savings significantly led me to do some further analysis as to what those drivers are being paid. What I found was shocking. My full analysis is here: http://on.fb.me/eiVpPj Although I felt the academic priorities in the budget were a step [...]

I tweeted much of today’s BOE Open Finance Meeting at http://bit.ly/i50bDf. It was a packed house, far different from the last Open Finance Meeting. The general public was not able to review the budget yet. The plan is for a presentation to be made at Monday’s meeting. Highlights include funding increased about $1.7 million from the state. In-house speech therapists and nurses would be maintained. Substitute teaching would be outsourced, although current substitutes could apply. Certified staff would remain intact. Limited reductions in uncertified staff. Expect to reduce 15 bus drivers. Elementary courtesy busing would remain. G&T Arts would come back. Elementary music would remain. There would be some curriculum changes in math and chemistry. Literacy coaches would remain. The website should get updated sometime soon so the public can see this in more detail.

Recently, I made a decision to serve the people of Woodbridge and our students, by running for the Board of Education. I am an eleven-year resident of Woodbridge. David Pinkowitz commented on the blog post School Report Cards: How did Woodbridge schools perform? 12 months ago · View
Woodbridge does a fine job on the state tests, which measure proficiency of the student body (i.e. the level one must reach to be at grade level). Although these results should be commended, one has to wonder whether the District should set its goals a bit higher. Passing the NJ ASK means the most to [...]

There was a meeting on February 3. It was lightly attended. Seven Board members were present with Yuhasz absent due to illness and Golden absent due to his work. At the start of the meeting, only six members of the public were there, although we got up to eight I believe. I tweeted some of [...]

At the most recent Board of Education Meeting, the Board announced that it had completed its most recent self evaluation, which would be made available through an Open Public Records Act (“OPRA”) request. Fortunately, there was no foul play involved here and the quick-thinking firefighters prevented a tragedy.
